5 Myths About Mattresses

There are many myths about mattresses, which are simply not true. These misconceptions can not only make sleeping less comfortable, they can have negative effects on your body. Before you make your next bedding purchase, take the time to consider these factors:

Myth 1: All mattresses should be replaced after eight years

This can be a good guide to help you decide, but ultimately it is about the quality and how often the mattress is used. For example, the bedding in your guest room will probably last considerably longer than eight years since it probably is not used daily. There is also a good chance that your old mattress will need to be replaced before you have had it eight years. Listen to your body. If you are not sleeping well, it may be time to replace your mattress.

Myth 2: Foam mattresses are hot

This is personal preference. If you are prone to getting hot at night, changing your bedding could be the answer. Foam is there to make the mattress softer, not warmer!

Myth 3: Firm mattresses are better for your body
If you are not comfortable on a firm mattress, then it is not better. Your bed should be comfortable so you get a good night’s sleep. Memory foam is especially good because it contours to your body, adding support where needed and providing give where needed.

Myth 4: You can get the best sleep on an air or water bed

Not only does this contradict the previous myth, it is not true for a larger percentage of people. The bed will shift and move as you sleep, which does not provide the adequate amount of support. If you are a light sleeper, these are probably the worst beds for you because you may be constantly awakened by your bed as you shift positions.

Myth 5: Toppers are the solution to any mattress issue

While toppers can increase comfort, if your mattress is older and very uncomfortable, a topper is probably not the best option. A new, quality mattress will provide the comfort and support needed.
