How to Care for Your Memory Foam Mattress

Written by Land of Sleep | January 09, 2023

If you've ever laid on a memory foam mattress, you know why they're so popular. If you're looking to sleep well and wake up refreshed night after night, you can't go wrong with a quality memory foam mattress. Of course, if you're thinking about purchasing one or are lucky enough to own one already, it's important to properly care for them. Check out these simple tips to keep your memory foam mattress in tip-top shape for years to come.

Vacuum Often

If you think that your vacuum should be used exclusively on your carpets and rugs, think again. Vacuuming your mattress on a regular basis is a great way to prevent hair and dust from building up over time. Since vacuuming your mattress probably isn't at the top of your "to-do" list, a good time to tackle this chore is whenever you wash your sheets.

Treat Messes Quickly

If you spill something on your memory foam mattress or notice a stain on it, don't wait to treat it. Stains that set into your mattress will likely be harder to remove and could even damage the integrity of the foam. For stains that have already dried, try cleaning them with a spray bottle mixed with one part laundry detergent and two parts water. After spraying the stain lightly, gently scrub it with a microfiber cloth and blot it dry with a clean towel.

Rotate Regularly

Even the best mattresses will wear down over time, particularly if you lie in the same spot night after night. To ensure that one area of your memory foam mattress doesn't become worn out while another area remains intact, it's a good idea to rotate your mattress at least twice a year. This simple step can make a big difference in extending the life of your mattress.

Avoid Harsh Chemicals

When it comes to tackling serious messes on your memory foam mattress, such as pet urine, it can be tempting to break out harsh chemicals to combat unwanted stains and odors. Unfortunately, using strong cleaning products on your mattress, such as bleach, is never a good idea. Harsh chemicals can not only cause your mattress to deteriorate or discolor but would also require a substantial amount of water to adequately clean. Because memory foam mattresses are so absorbent, it would be very difficult to remove the remaining chemicals and/or water left behind.

Use a Mattress Cover

A mattress cover is your memory foam mattress's best friend. Mattress covers do exactly what their name implies: protect your mattress from coming into contact with bodily fluids, animals, and other debris, so that it looks, smells, and feels newer for longer. Best of all, they're affordable and easy to care for. Pro-tip: be sure to choose one that's water-resistant, so if something spills on your bed, your mattress will be safe.

Follow the Manufacturer's Instructions

When in doubt about how to clean or care for your memory foam mattress, always read the manufacturer's instructions before taking matters into your own hands. They are the experts, after all.
