To help you design the perfect bed, we've concocted the following checklist:

Begin with a Budget. Like anything else in life, dreaming big can get expensive. To design your perfect bed, set expense expectations ahead of time so you're not facing sticker shock that will keep you up at night when the process is said and done.

Set Size Expectations. Most people have a minimum size, which defines an absolute beginning of the search. Two people fit most comfortably on a queen or larger, but keep in mind that beds can be too big, too. Part of setting size expectations should involve sizing up your sleeping space so you don't purchase furniture doesn't work with the dimensions of your dreamland.

Address Your Ailments. Sleep should be a time for rest and restoration. When you leave ailments unaddressed, your sleep can be negatively impacted. On the other hand, if you bring these burdens to the shopping process, the perfect bed can help alleviate some of the problems. Acid reflux and vertigo have been known to be reduced by adjustable beds. Chronic back and body pain can often be minimized with the right firmness of mattress.

Don't Forget about the Frame. When people are building their perfect bed, they typically focus on the aesthetic appeal of the design and the feel of the mattress. Of course, each of these are essential pieces of the slumber puzzle, but you don't want to forget about the frame. These support structures vary more than many people realize, and it helps to educate yourself about the factors that make frames different. Buying a new bed frame that suits your individual sleep needs goes a long way.

Understand Mattress Materials. The way a new mattress feels is absolutely important, but there's generally a science behind each feel-good fluff top that people don't stop to think about. The materials of the mattresses can impact the way your body lays, the amount of heat emitted throughout the night, durability, and a number of other factors. Latex and gel are just two of many options.
